Why the 30th anniversary matters for card collectors

Pokemon began in Japan on February 27, 1996. Official 30th anniversary activity in 2026 has put the hobby back in the spotlight, and that can change how collectors behave. Some people return to childhood sets, some start buying modern sealed products, and others focus on promos connected to events, stores, or anniversary branding.

The practical problem is that anniversary collecting can spread across lots of places. A collector might open booster packs, pick up a store promo, trade for missing reverses, and keep a separate shortlist of cards they want graded later. Without a tracker, it is easy to forget what is owned, what is missing, and which version of a card is actually needed.

What to track during an anniversary year

• Main set progress, including regular cards, reverse holos, illustration rares, and secret rares.
• Promo cards from boxes, tins, events, stores, magazines, or special releases.
• Condition notes for cards that may later be replaced, graded, sold, or traded.
• Cards you own but want in a different language, finish, or condition.
• Chase cards you are actively watching before card shows, online buys, or trades.

Binder view makes anniversary collecting easier

A checklist is useful, but a binder layout gives collectors a more natural sense of progress. Seeing a 3 by 3 page of card slots makes missing cards obvious. It also feels closer to how the collection exists in real life: pages, pockets, gaps, and completed runs.

For anniversary cards, a binder view is especially useful because special releases are often collected visually. You can spot missing page positions quickly and avoid buying duplicate cards simply because a list looked incomplete at a glance.

A good anniversary chase list is specific

"I need anniversary cards" is not a useful chase list. A better list says exactly which cards matter, which condition is acceptable, and whether you need the card raw, sealed, or graded. That helps at shows and trade nights because you can make faster decisions without scrolling through photos or old notes.
